Yet when mapping this stage onto the yin/yang symbol, you will note that the black dot captures our eye. The black dot is the underlying motivation or the essence of our communication. At the center lies my basic intention, or why I am communicating in the first place.

Those who powerfully communicate have a clear and often broadly inclusive motivation. Gandhi held countrywide peace, equality, and self- rule as his intentions in all pursuits. Hitler knew he wanted to conquer the world. The intention might be creative or destructive. Regardless, if it is clear and aligned with words and actions an innate force always comes through. Because of the clarity and broad appeal of these motivations, they both carried great energy.

THE WAY OF CONFLICT AND THE TAOIST SYMBOL
A promise is a cloud; fulfillment is rain.
— Arabian proverb

The most exhausting thing in my life is being insincere.
— Anne Morrow
Lindbergh

My motivation may be to resolve a conflict. However, it could also be to teach another a lesson or to exact revenge. The motivation will be clearly communicated, whether we like it or not. We communicate our intention through visual and other sensory clues, and, if you are seeking to destroy your opponent, she will sense that something is amiss. If you are sincerely seeking to protect your opponent’s interests and your own, he will eventually sense your sincerity. If I am clear about my motivation, I am rarely surprised by the results of a conversation. This is the power of honesty.
