Look To Others

The character of Baba Yaga in our folktale reminds us that solutions to our problems often come in strange packages. What would happen if in every conversation we believed that we were speaking with the teacher who holds all the answers in every conflict? What if we believed that the perfect answer could be found by listening to the grocery store clerk or to the ramblings of a six-year-old? Wouldn’t we pay attention?

In the Earth phase we addressed listening to others, even the ugly and smelly Lady Ragnell of our King Arthur legend, to gather information on the situation as it exists today. We return to this practice in the Fire phase as we seek not just information but also innovative solutions. Here we attempt seeing another not only as a source of information but also as a source of great wisdom.

We have the opportunity to learn more by believing that each of us holds a god spark, or extraordinary insight. When I am listening to another, can I hear this essence speaking? What is it saying? I will feel like I see glimmers of this spark, this common connection, at different points when someone converses, and then it will be gone. Perhaps it is because at that moment I see and hear clearly as my filters and veils of judgment drop. Perhaps, it is often hidden and hard to discern, but our bodies react with a “yes” when we hear it.
