Lost

Stand still. The trees ahead and the bushes beside you are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here,
and you must treat it as a powerful stranger,
must ask permission to know it and be known.

The forest breathes. Listen. It answers,

I have made this place around you,
if you leave it you may come back again, saying Here.

No two trees are the same to Raven.

No two branches are the same to Wren.
If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you, you are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows where you are. You must let it find you.

When we stand still for a bit, as Blaze, Amy, Gene, and Edina did when they took a break and went to lunch, we can see the forest through the trees. We can recognize where in the woods we stand. Like Vasilisa we can then hear the voices that support our well-being. How often do we feel lost, not understanding where we are in a relationship, in a dispute, in our career, or in our life’s journey? If we are able to rest and fully acknowledge our current position, from there we can map out our next steps.

My husband, Bruce, was raised on a guest ranch in southwestern Montana. From the time he could walk, he rode horses and entertained guests from all over the world. Each summer, he would guide groups of city folk through thickets and over mountain trails in the brilliance of the Rocky Mountains. And along with them he would get lost. When I asked him how he would get home again, he said, “I realized that I just needed to get really quiet. I’d tell the dudes to get off their horses, that we were taking a break, and I would buy myself some time. I’d just sit and listen. Then I would know which way to go next. It was never obvious and sometimes looked like the worst direction of all to proceed in. But it always led us home if I trusted it. The answer was already there — I just needed to listen.”
