Practical Tips

To effectively find a solution, we first stand still so that we can see and hear more clearly. When we halt briefly we can focus on the world around us. Remember how Vasilisa stopped at each fork of the road and asked the doll where to go next. Before any action, she pauses, takes in her situation, and listens to her intuition (symbolized in the story by the doll). An old Native American teaching story on stopping to listen has been translated into the following poem by David Wagoner:
Misfortune! Good fortune supports it.
Good fortune! Misfortune hides within.
Who knows where it ends? Is there no order?
— I Ching
You have to stare the world in the face although the world may look at you with bloodshot eyes. Do not fear. Trust that little thing in you which resides in the heart.
